The day was sweltering. A dark lake glittered in the sun. Its shores abruptly rose into pineland. In the sparse shade of the forest sat a log building and a motorcycle with a somewhat painful magenta-and-cyan paint job. The motorbike's owner sat on the terrace of the building, poking at an online uni course on their laptop while shovelling a goopy mixture of strawberries, milk and a roasted oat-pea flour into their mouth. The spoon paused halfway on its way to the person's mouth, and their expression turned pinched. They lowered the spoon and stood. Something strange was afoot.

He walked up, very awkwardly, it’s obvious he’s nervous. He would be in full costume, a deep blue suit with shirts and pants on top with his metal mask resting on his face. He’s dark brown and wildly unkept hair flowing behind him as he struts

Mikitta frowned, descending the cabin's steps to approach the new arrival. "Öö, terve? Ootsä eksyksis?" The outfit was strange, of course. It reminded Mikitta of one of the supers on the news; Javelin first and foremost, but it wasn't unusual for the other members of S.H.E to cross the news threshold due to their association with Finland's national superhero, and the folks across the pond, of course, had the biannual apocalyptic events they thwarted or partook in.

Uhhh…hi! I’m just trying to get my bearings….uhh shit I don’t think you can understand me…..

Mikitta raised a brow and immediately changed tracks. "Nah, I can. Are you lost?"

Uhhh, kinda? I understand the basics of im in the wrong universe and the put the wrong earth in my jumper, but aside from that I’m a little bewildered rn.

Mikitta nodded slowly, eyes narrowed. "Rrrright. That doesn't sound like something I can give you directions for", they said, suspicious but inclined to play along rather than interrogate whoever-this-was.

I get that…..who are you exactly? Obviously not someone I’ve ever met….

Mikitta stepped back up on the terrace, leaning against the railing. They felt better with some space between themself and this... whoever-this-was. "My name's Mikitta. My family owns this summer cabin. And you?"

Mako….aka Scorch….aka tick….depends on who your talking too.

She sighed, walking out of a portal. She dragged her brother alongside her. "This place don't look familiar, is this one we haven't been to?"

He nodded, "Never seen this before."

Mikitta's eye twitched, and they straightened up again, glancing around. "Are there more of you?" they asked.

"Okay so, clearly we don't want to stress anyone out. So let's try to just... Act casual. Like uh, idk. Cosplay excuse?" She explained to her brother, somewhat hiding behind a tree with him.

He nodded awkwardly, glancing around curiously.

Mikitta frowned, leaning over the terrace railing to look around. "'These people'?" Mikitta pushed their glasses up, spotting someone's shoulder behind the trunk of a pine. "Yo, this is private property!" They called, starting to get a little miffed with these strange uninvited guests popping up when their cabin was in the middle of bloody nowhere. There was no excuse for a bunch of people to show up, and without a vehicle in sight to boot. They narrowed their eyes again and backed into the vestibule of the cabin, grabbing a shovel and leaning it against the railing when they returned to the terrace. They felt mildly better with something longer than their arm within reach.

Uhhh…who could that be? Hehe…..I’m gonna get shot…..most likely

She blinked, "Ah- apologies! We must've uh, wandered too far. But we assumed that we'd keep going to uh- find our way." She called out.

He blinked, peeking out.

Uhm, what am I going to do, fuck I’m going to be shot in this country I don’t even now the name of…..

Mikitta had no idea how to arrange their face at this point. The scorch guy was rambling about getting shot, the other duo was acting more reasonably but if they were common berry pickers Mikitta would eat their own arm. "Man, do you need me to call the police?" they asked Scorch. They grabbed their phone and swept the lock screen up, hovering their finger over the text "HÄTÄ" on the bottom of the screen.

Hata…? Okay. And the police don’t need to be involved, just….HEY YOU FUCKERS GET OVER HERE! I’ll handle it…

She sighed, walking over. Her brother stumbled over a few rocks on the way behind her.

he walks up to them, fake angry GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE he changes to a whisper why you guys here?

"Oh, sorry sir!" She hollered. Then she whispered, "This idiot wanted to go exploring places we've never been." She pointed at her brother.

He smiled innocently under his mask.

Mikitta kept their phone in their hand, ready to call the police, regardless of whatever the Scorch guy said. The hollering—as if the Scorch guy had any authority here—and the obvious whispering (at least obvious to anyone with enhanced senses) had Mikitta giving a 'can you believe this shit?' kind of gesture in the direction of the trio of what Mikitta was at the moment inclined to call suspicious weirdos.

Could you…..here sneak around back to the bathroom well met up there and talk….GET OUT YOU ANNOYING TEENS!

She peaked behind Scorch, looking at them. "Scorch, I don't think there's any use in whispering-" She cleared her throat and stepped into view of them. "Hi, sorry. I promise we aren't trespassing intentionally. We're uh... Actually legit lost. We've never been in this area before." She slightly waved.

He looked around, dumbfounded.

Mikitta sighed, lowering the phone slightly. "Are you also universal travellers?" they asked the girl semi-sardonically, raising a brow while giving Scorch a sideways glance.

Uhhh fuck I did say that….No! I was just joking! I mouth go to the twins

"Well, as much as I'd love to listen Scorch, we can't just leave them here stressed. I highly doubt we're gonna be the only visitors. Yes, we are... I guess that. We're from different dimensions and the most common cause for us to be somewhere else is because of trouble. But my brother here, being the idiot he is, wanted to go explore somewhere we haven't. So we try to avoid confrontation by minding our business and simply admiring the beauty of the different dimensions."

And i put in the wrong earth! Sorry, hehe....................

Mikitta sighed. "Sounds a bit far-fetched, but I'll just take your word for it." They canted their head, remembering something Scorch had rambled about. "It's Finland, by the way. The name of the country. Where are y'guys from, anyway? We mostly get Wendish tourists and you don't sound like that..."

"Well, I guess we don't really have much of an accent to really make it obvious from where me and my brother are from. But in our dimension, we're from Brooklyn."

He got bored, so he randomly started doing jumping jacks.

Same…different universes though….am I a idiot for thinking Hata was a country?

Mikitta chuckled slightly. "You do have an American accent. I'm just not very familiar with the specific regions they correspond to, y'know?" Mikitta's own accent was very much one of a continental European English-as-a-Second-Language speaker, recognizable as a Finnish one by those familiar with the sound, but also similar to Portuguese and Dutch English-speaker accents. Mikitta cleared their throat. "Say... What's with the outfits? Are y'all supers?"

"I suppose you could say that. Ever heard of Spider-Man? Maybe comics or somethin of some type?"

Yeah….comics are a thing in a lot of places. I’m Scorch! he goes fire mode, his hair becoming a blazing inferno in the rough shape of his normal hair, his physical body not just fire in the shape of his body

Mikitta shakes their head slowly. "Spider-Man? No... There is an Iron Man in the US, though. And Batman comics? But I mean, Iron Man is rea—" They cut themselves off with a squeak as Scorch flames up and wave their hand in alarm. "Put it out, put it out!" Mikitta jumps over the railing of the terrace, grabs a bucket off the ground, dunks it in a blue barrel of rainwater, and flings the water at Scorch in a magnificent arc, all at a slightly off speed.

She blinked, staring for a brief moment. "Right... Well. Basically most of us got bit by a radioactive spider and it gave us spider like abilities. Most of us can stick on walls and such, swing on webs, have incredible strength, and some of us have special abilities like the fire."

As the water hits him, the fire recoils back and dims a bit but comes back full force It can’t spread unless I let it! There’s no way I’ll burn anything down!

Mikitta stares as Scorch, still holding the bucket. "Wh- Well put it out anyway! There's a forest fire warning, the cabin is made of wood, it's not a comforting sight!" Mikitta glances at the purple-clad girl as her words register. "Do y'all usually grow extra nipples on your hands?" Weird non-sequitur? Maybe, maybe not.

He goes back to normal and rips off his metal mask, revealing his brown face and small stubble WHAT ABOUT NIPPLES?

"Nipples? I- I chose not to question. I'm gonna assume you're this world's Spider-Man. Other than, err, THAT, what have you experienced?"

Mikitta waved a hand at Scorch. "Eh, they're not actually nipples, just... Look, sorry, this is just the weirdest thing." They drop the bucket next to the barrel and approach the trio, pointing at a... something on the base of their palm. "First I thought I was getting a wart, which, gross but not, like, that weird. But then there were two?" The show both of their hands. "But then..." Their face goes sour. "Actually, yes, let's just skip over that." They hide their hands under their armpits. "Uh, anyway, I got bitten by a bug, got really sick with what seemed like flu, but then after that I started getting in shape, it was like..." They unfold their arms and make a gesture with a hand, like a graph shooting up. "Which was weird, 'cause I used to be the laggard."

"Right, uh. Are you sure it wasn't a spider bite maybe? I mean, I guess getting bit by a bug could somewhat be the same concept of spider bites... I'm not sure what's gonna happen to you. It's different for everyone. When I was bit, my body practically went through four different phases and it was not pretty. My brother on the other hand, thinks he's so great because it didn't hurt him as much as it did me."

I burned down my house….but I doubt we’ll have the same powers god forbid. But yeah you could BECOME spiders or get more arms…..shit fucks with you.

Mikitta shrugged. "Idunno, at first I thought maybe it was a tick? 'Cause it could've been that... tick... brain... fever? Borreliosis? But there aren't supposed to be ticks where I was at the time. So..." They shrugged again. "Could've been a spider." They glanced between Scorch and the girl in purple. "This was over half a year ago, though, and I haven't really noticed any new changes in a while..."

"Interesting.... Maybe try uh... Try flexing your wrist real quick. Some of us have organic webs." She suggested.

I do! There made of fire so I won’t do it. All though…..have you tried to climb walls?

Mikitta did some kind of random wrist flexing motions, wrinkling their nose. Nothing happened. "They do leak sticky goop if I squeeze them." Mikitta may or may not have tried to pop them like zits at one point. They frowned at Scorch's comment in thought. "Not walls, but I did climb on ATVs a bunch in military training. It was easier with fingerless gloves, the full gloves felt really slippery..."

"Hm.... Try jumping on a wall with your hands and feet. But don't like, faceplant into it or jump without being able to land safely. Does that make sense?"

Fuckkkk your body’s taking a REALLY long time to change but as some one with 12 years experience, YOUR SPIDER-MAN! Or…SPIDER-PERSON!

Mikitta suddenly grinned. "Oh, yeah! I can jump really well!" They crouched a little, waved their arms up and then down with a sharp movement, and jumped straight up, well above everyone's heads, before thudding back down in a crouch. "Can you show me how y'all climb on walls, though?"

Uh, sure! Fuck it,I’ll teach how to be spider…..man? What should I call you…? Anywho, I’ll teach you the ropes, of everything spider person!

"Right, um..." She walked over to the cabin wall, slowly putting her hands on the wall. She climbed up a little bit, then turned herself around whilst still attached to the wall. "I guess something like this?" She looked at Mikitta.

Your-god damit-I’ll show her! he walks over and puts a bit of pressure on the wall you want to press in to it, tense your fingers.

"Well for the record, they only said to show them how we do it, not to teach them. I mean, I'd assume they'd want that too but I think an example would've been fine."

Mikitta shrugged to Scorch. "I've just been calling myself a mutant." Mikitta watched as the purple-clad girl approached the wall and started climbing it. They couldn't help but grin. "No kidding!" They approached the wall, only for Scorch to walk over and start showing them how to do it. Mikitta watched with interest, peering closely at Scorch's hands to see any hints at how it worked. They then reached up with both arms and tried to grab onto the rounded side of one of the logs forming the wall. It felt the same as when they'd climbed the ATVs, the same confidence in not slipping, so Mikitta lifted one foot off the ground, then the other. "Look, mother, without legs!" they joked, choosing to dismiss the bickering at least for now. "Hey, I didn't get your name, I don't think?" they said abruptly, turning to face the purple-clad girl.

He climbs up to the stop very fast and sits on the roof Keep on coming up…..what’s your name? Did you say it yet?

Mikitta's eyes widened. "Oh, right! I did tell my name to you, but not them." They turned to the purple-clad girl and offered her their left hand to shake, hanging on the wall by only one hand now. "I'm Karamäe Mikitta, nice to meet you! Mikitta's the given name."

She shook their hand, "Well, considering secret identities and such, you can just call me Vixen."

He blinked, surprisingly being quiet for once. Unfortunately for him, he was just interested in a bug.

Call me mako! It’s my real name.

Mikitta nodded. "Vixen it is." They got their feet against the curves of the log wall, pushing themselves up to reach higher, then kept on climbing up, finally grabbing the eave of the roof and pulling themself up. They sat on the edge of the roof as well. "Well, Mako, Vixen, a year ago I'd never have dreamt of pulling myself up on a roof like this." They gazed to the ground. "The height still makes me kind of queasy." They peered at the red-clad spider guy still on the ground. "What do I call him, then?" they mused.

Just call him a bitch, it’s quite fitting

"Wow."

He was absolutely fascinated by a simple bug.

"Most people call him Horned. He's my idiot twin brother, he gets us into trouble.... And I get us out." She sighed. "Well, fortunately for you I don't think he's in a trouble causing mood. He seems to be fascinated by... A bug."

A touch of the tism, you might say.

"Did you know, that with global warming, this one spruce-killing bug is spreading further and further north? See that spruce over there?" they asked, pointing at a tall spruce some ways away. "The one with the dry branches at the top? Apparently that's a sign that the tree has been hit by the bug. We call them book-printers, because of the intricate patterns they eat into the wood."

Are they invasive? Does this normally happen here?

She listened, glancing to the trees and then back at them.

Mikitta half-shrugged. "Eh, well, we've had them in southern Finland as long as anyone can remember, but we didn't use to need to worry about them at this latitude." They remained silent for a moment, then changed tracks. "Oh, hey, how do y'all do the web shooty thing, then?" they asked, gazing at the Spider-people with interest.

"Some of us can flex our wrists I'm a specific hand movement and organic web comes out, others make web shooters. My idiot brother doesn't have organic webs like mine."

I do! Like I said before, there kinda made of fire…..and I can’t turn it off

Mikitta pondered for a moment, then: "I have an idea!" They carefully lowered themself over the edge of the roof, catching their feet against the log wall, then let themself hang and dropped the rest of the way down. It was insane that they could do things like this, now. "Let's go to the pier! You can shoot the web over the lake!"

Sure! Lead us there! he says as he jumps off the roof in a very awkward way

She nodded, jumping off as well.

Mikitta grabbed the water bucket and lead the way to the nearby wooden pier, pushing aside reeds which reached into their path over the pier. Some of them were even growing through the cracks between the planks. "Sorry about these, I've been procrastinating on clearing these out." Mikitta scooped up a bucket of water and cast it on the pier, ensuring that most of the planks at the end of the pier were wet; all in case any burning matter might fall on them. With another bucket of water ready at their side, they gestured to the glimmering lake. "Have at it. And if you're so inclined, feel free to try to torch some of that, eh, 'fish-grass' over there, the, uh, trophic... eutrophication, it sucks." They pointed at some leafy water vegetation further in the lake, awkwardly almost forming a barrier between the pier and the open water; inconvenient for swimmers.

The WHAT sucks? he says, facing her before launch a long strand of fiery webs on to the fish grass, causing it to spread and burn

She shrugged at Scorch, watching.

"It's when too many nutrients find their way into lakes, run-off from, eh, crop fields and such, and the water vegetation spreads like this... Over time, the vegetation takes over more and more of the lake, and down the line, it turns into more of a marsh", Mikitta explains, watching the sizzling plants in satisfaction. They eye Scorch. "How do you even do that? Like... how do you tell it to... go?" They glance at Vixen as well, tilting their head.

"Well, I suppose most spider people just like... Aim and then make this hand movement and flex their wrist and as long as you're aiming at something it can reach it'll work just fine." She did the iconic hand pose and flexed her wrist, letting some of her neon purple webs shoot out onto the ground.

Basically what she said! Also, you have to flick your wrist into the flex so it travels farther. And there biodegradable so need to worry about littering with your webs.

Mikitta watched Vixen's movements carefully, and copied the hand pose. "... That's kind of awkward", they muttered, tilting their hand back a bit, but still, nothing happened. "Maybe there's a muscle here that I just haven't.. 'found', yet", they muttered, examining their hand and poking at the spinneret at the base of their palm.

She shrugged, "You might not have organic webs."

Let me see your wrist, I might be able to tell…..

Mikitta shrugged, offering their hand to Scorch. There was nothing remarkable about their wrist, but there was a symmetrical lump at the base of their palm that looked like it could be a spinneret.

Try flexing it like me….he bands his wrist out wards Maybe…..it will work…

Mikitta imitated his movements, to no avail. They shrugged. "Eh, maybe it'll come to me one day..." They cleared their throat, steepling their fingers. "Now, in the spirit of not being a terrible host: would y'all like some coffee?"

I don’t drink coffee…..waters fine.

"Yeah water for me too. And my brother- well. He seems to have portaled off again..." She shrugged.

Mikitta laughed. "I don't drink coffee either, it's kind of a turn of phrase. I have hot chocolate and... Uh, sports drink? And, well, water as well. And some strawberries." They headed over to the cabin, opening the door and pushing aside the fly fringe in the doorway, only for an orange-brown shape to bolt through the doorway, running over to the guests accompanied with a couple barks. Mikitta called its name, followed by: "Paikka, tänne, perkele..." The sable spitz circled around the guests, but did indeed return to Mikitta and sit down next to them, its fluffy, curled tail wagging. It gave a bark. "Hys", said Mikitta.

GOD he jumps at the dog and backs up, terrified FUCKING HELL

She blinked, looking at the dog. "Huh."

Mikitta clicks their tongue. "Eh, maybe I should've just let Toarie outside earlier, when I wanted rid of y'all. It's not angry, just very energetic." They snapped their fingers and said something to the dog, and it followed them inside the cabin. Mikitta poked their head back out. "You can sit by the table there", they said, pointing at the small table on the terrace, with a laptop and a half-eaten bowl of tan goop with strawberries in it. "Y'all sure you want just water?"

Hes still very scared and shaking with a horrified look on his face Im…..sacred of dogs….

Mikitta frowns. "I'm so sorry, I wasn't thinking. I'll make sure it stays inside."

She sat down. "Dogs aren't so bad, unless they're aggressive or had bad owners or somethin."

THERE SCARY! THEY DO SCARY SHIT!

"Like what?" She looked at Scorch.

They bite! They eat dead body’s! Can go rabid! Can get there owners sick, a bunch of shit!

Mikitta raises their brow sardonically. "I mean, most of that applies to pretty much any animal people keep. Horses bite. Cats give you toxoplasmosis and may eat their owners' corpses if the owner dies and the cat has nothing else to eat. Pigs are well-known for being a 'good way to dispose of corpses'", Mikitta listed, doing air quotes for the last. "Rabies doesn't really show up in Finland, anyway."

They also look scary! Like demons!

Mikitta's brows flirted with their hairline. "... Okay then. Are you sure you just wanted water? I should have cinnamon rolls in the fridge, I could defrost some."

I would like some cinnamon rolls…..just keep the dog away from me!

Mikitta sighs, pulling the door closed after themself and walking further into the cabin. They find a bag of cinnamon rolls in the freezer and defrost them in the microwave. With a plate of cinnamon rolls and a pitcher of water with ice cubes, they return outside, making sure the dog doesn't slip out and kicking the door closed with the heel of their foot. They set down the pitcher and plate, move their laptop out of the way and pull the plate of strawberry goop to themself to finish eating it.

Oh! thank you! he takes the plates and starts eating them super fast

She blinked, "So, uh. How long have you been.... Alone? If it's okay to ask anyways... You don't have to answer."

Mikitta also blinked. "Who, me? Alone? How do you mean?"

You live in a shack in the woods, lady! That’s not super social behavior.

Mikitta smiled awkwardly. "Right, Americans... This is my family's summer cabin."

he laughs at the family remark Not for long……

Mikitta narrows their eyes. "Bruh, that's not at all suspicious."

You got a uncle? Cause soon you won’t!

"Um. I'm not sure if I should tell, now."

he might die soon, but that’s all I’m saying…

Mikitta leans their elbow on the table and their cheek on their palm. "I have four uncles. One of them has MS. So like..." They shrug demonstratively.

What’s “MS”? Is it a disease?

"It's... I don't really know exactly, but people who have it might eventually end up in a wheelchair? And they might seem a bit like they have Alzheimer's? I think? But yeah, it's a disease."

I hope he isn’t the canon event……poor guy.

"Scorch I don't think we're supposed to tell people their canon events. Remember the Miles situation?"

Yeah…..I think I was cryptic enough though! They probably are clueless!

Mikitta looked a bit miffed. "So, I'm taking it Spider-people are destined to lose family members, maybe specifically uncles, then. Lucky that I'm not close with any of mine."

Uhhh nooooooo

"Well.... Not exactly. We can't tell you anymore but I guess sometimes it's like that.... Scorch, let's.. not. We could disrupt the canon and 2099 would absolutely be furious."

Mikitta scratched their plate with their spoon in a jarring screech. "Besides, I don't believe in destiny. At least not on an individual level. Maybe on a broader level, but even then, it's individuals who make a destiny. You have to hit the right notes, or the destiny remains unfulfilled. That's why we have to do good things in life, so one day we might find a victory condition. So to speak."

Hey, since your 100% a spider person, we can meet up, maybe a few times a week, and I can train you! Help you hone your powers! If your interested….

"Hm. Well, as long as you don't interfere with their canon events, I'd say it would be fine to teach them the ropes."

Bold of you to assume I would! I’m not smart enough to do so….

Mikitta huffed. "What's all this about canon events? It makes it sound like we're supposed to be in... Homestuck."

2 things, one, So you want me to teach you? Two, we can’t really tell you cause it might fuck things up.

Mikitta frowned, then smirked. "Okay, stop me if you've heard this before... So there's canon... and then, if you make a choice that makes you diverge from the canon, the timeline becomes doomed, and all of you in that timeline eventually die."

……..spot on

"Well, in that case, shouldn't y'all have a prime directive? A non-interference clause? I don't want to 'doom my timeline'" - Mikitta made air quotes here - "by accident because y'all set in motion some butterfly wing effect."

She shrugged, "Well I mean... As long as we don't do anything like tell you what could happen or help you, you should be fine."

Mikitta squinted. "Are you sure? What if something you've already told me changes how I react to certain stimuli? What if his training changes my choices? This all seems immensely risky, if you really are concerned with keeping things 'canon'." Again with the scare quotes.

Hey, listen! We won’t fuck any thing up! Me training you won’t fuck anything up, you won’t fuck anything up. Cannon is hard to disrupt, so usually it takes effort to break canon.

She nodded in agreement with Scorch.

Mikitta crossed their arms. "This all seems incredibly slipshod."

Yeah, but we live with it.

"Well. You two can do whatever, I think I'm gonna go try to find where the hell my brother could have gone to. I'll probably see you guys another time."

Bye Vix! I’ll start trying to train Miss Mikitta. he says, butchering the pronunciation

"Bye-bye Vixen! It was nice meeting you!" Mikitta waved, then turned to Scorch. "It's Mee-keet-tah." They took a bracing breath. "But, man, no offense, but considering how loose-lipped you have been up to now, I don't know if I can trust you. If what you've been saying is true, I don't want to risk it you slipping something, me putting together 2+2, and dooming my timeline as a result."

I’m like 99% sure the whole cannon thing is fake….and I’ll shut up about secrets since your worried, I also don’t want your earth being destroyed.

Mikitta tilted their head. "Sure. It sounds fucking fake. Like whoever thought up your terminology has been reading too much fanfic. But." They pointed at Scorch. "'Loose lips cost lives.'"

Mine won’t…..I agree fate is dumb and bullshit and I’m gladly going to keep my mouth shut….but if there’s one thing I can predict it’s that your earth will be fine, and I’m sure of that.

Mikitta sighs. "Fine. I guess you can keep visiting to teach me the tricks of the trade."

Yippe……We’ll start your first lesson tomorrow, I gotta….save the goblin from bleeding out, just got message on my jumper. He points to it on his wrist

"Okay. Have fun with that. I'll..." They glanced over to the pier. "... Get started clearing out those damn reeds."

He walks through a portal to his right

Mikitta waves, sighs, and starts cleaning up the table. Once the strange portal has fully closed, they let Toarie out on the yard.
